Life is Beautiful!

There are two assignments given based on the movie. Choose any one from the first question and respond in the blog. Choose any one from the second and submit it on 5th October.
1. (a) Does hiding the truth from children normally help or hinder them?     Describe how Guido’s constant refusal to tell his son the exact truth, allows his son to remain hopeful and trustful of his father.
(OR)
(b) What is important to Guido? From the movie identify instances of Guido doing whatever is necessary to protect what is most dear to him.

2. (a) Write a letter from an adult Joshua's point of view to his late father thanking him for what he did. Your letter should include your memories of the dreadful camp days.
(OR)
Design a movie poster for a sequel or prequel to the film.
(OR)
Write a short diary entries from the perspective of father, mother and son on the fated last day of the camp.
Everyone is supposed to post their views and submit the second one. The earlier review had just a few posts. Should I close it? Marks are on the basis of responses for all posts.

  1. (a) I do not agree with the idea of hiding reality from children, For I believe that tough details of reality especially when the kid is directly or in a way involved plays a crucial role in shaping their naked adultlife. It teaches them the true sense of perseverance and resilience to fight against any odds they would face later in life. This movie which revolves around the life of an open minded Jewish librarian and his son becoming victims of the Holocast, potrays a father's protective charm on his son's innocence which seemingly spares the kid from catastrophe as long as possible. Life of Jews did not change in a day after the end of Narcissism. Jews merely survived as slaves and refugees but never lived their life that other people were entitled to. What made their existence possible were the memories from the concentration camps which they lived through amidst the unexplained cruelty. In this context, had Joshua known what he had survived, he would have the will and courage to face anything oppressive. I believe that bad past inferred with a good perspective will nurture oneself with high emotional quotient and the idea of never giving up. But what has to be certainly agreed is the love the father has for his son. He didn't want his son to feel what the father was going through. His fertile imaginations to shield his son from the horrors of internment in the Nazi's camp could have been the main reason for the kid to survive in the wooden cupboard for hours together. I guess this very idea is an unbiased coin with two different sides having it's own pros and cons.

  2. (a) According to my perspective ,hinding the truth from the children helps us. Because from the story we could understand that the father had a great love with his son. So he doesn't want his son to be worried about their situation. He made his son comfortable by hiding the truth. Here we came to know about the father 's love towards his son. When we hide something and that makes some one feel happy that doesn't mean you are wrong. In this case it is a child, who even doesn't know that his father is in trouble. In such situation the father couldn't say the child about their worries and trouble. He instead told his son that he is attending a competition for the sake of the tank which is son loved the most. By such sayings and activities the child would not feel the pain of his father. Any father in this world never feel that their pain should be understood by someone else. And no father will express so. This is a common in all the fathers in the world

    (a) Dear papa....
I'm your Joshua writing for you. Miss you soo much papa. You made me comfortable and finally you were not there for me. It was really a dreadful place i had ever been in my life till now. Thank you so much papa... I'm now able to adapt to any type of surroundings. Those days were really harder to survive there. You instructed me and guided me throught the days we lived there. You told me to hide on the cots when people enter the room. I even miss my mom there in such situation. I think I troubled you a lot during those time when you are forced to do heavy works. It was a very dreadfully place. Papa do you remember that was my birthday when we came to this dreadfully place. You told me that if we get about a 1000 points we could get the first price as a tank for which I was asking you. Those days are the last moment where I stayed with you. I will never forget you papa. Papa i really miss you a lot. R. I. P papa which doesn't mean that Rest In Peace, it is Return If Possible.
    With love,
    Joshua...

1.(b) The most important thing to Guido was protecting his son and his wife. The way he made a game out of a serious situation was the best part about the movie. When he stood up to translate German even when he did not know anything just to protect his son from getting anxious was awesome. His presence of mind to save his son when he was caught near the school and during the dinner was pretty amazing. He used the mic to communicate with his wife which was daring. When the war was coming to an end he hid his son in a perfect place and went in search of Dora knowing all the odds. He bravely went in search of her and got caught and died. This shows that how much he loved them. He sacrificed his life to protect his family.

  5. I think Guido has gave importance to the beauty of a child's innocence and might be wanted Joshua to live up his childhood as a happy boy. Just think of from the child's perspective, if his father had told him the horrible reality that he was subjected to unimaginable terrors from the moment he arrived in the camp, that would definitely made the child scared and fall in sick. Instead Guido's optimist attitude and comedic nature made him alive against freezing weather and deprivation of food till the last day of camp. Therefore, they are certain things can be told to children because parents cannot protect a child from all the unpleasantness and they have to know all sides of life. "This is my story, this is the sacrifice my father made, this was his gift to me "these are the lines from Joshua at the end of story. This conveys us that he understands the Guido's philosophy to see good and to stay positive even in the worst case of scenario.

    1. a. According to my view, what Guido did was absolutely right. Here the reason why Guido hid the truth is what matters to me than the truth being hid. Let me be even more clear, Guido doesn't want his son to get exposed to the reality of the concentration camp, where each of the men and women were tortured to work while kids and older people were killed just because they were Jews. Guido decided to hide the truth from his son as he did not want his son to get frightened about the fact. The boy being 6 to 7 years old doesn't have a proper matured mind to actually understand what is going around when he will be told the truth, When we tell kids something like this they either get horrified or shape their mind in different way. Foundation of anything matters, so as a responsible father Guido decided to shape his son's foundation in a proper way. By Hiding the truth Guido not only helped his son survive the camp, he also helped his son from making any wrong judgment on religion and people, because when we set our minds (especially during young age) once that fact cant be changed so easily and that plays a major role in shaping our character.

(a)There is a famous quote that says HIDDEN TRUTHS ARE UNSPOKEN LIES. This saying tries to deliver the message that camouflaging any happening is as worse as giving false statements about it.So, let it be children or any human being, hiding the truth from them is not right from my perspective. But in this story,Life Is Beautiful,Guido constantly tries to hide the dreadful truth of the Nazi concentration camp from his son,Joshua. He makes it out to be complicated game and asks Joshua to follow certain tasks to play it and win the tank which is the ultimate prize.Guido takes advantages of the various situations in the camp to make Joshua believe and convince him that its a game when it actually isn't,but a ruthless injustice happenings to the Jews. This kept Joshua unaware of the catastrophes that his father and all the other people in the camp were going through.Though he suffered there,he was safe from the cruel kills and managed to live until he was rescued from the camp. There is chance that he might have panicked and could have got caught in one of the traps in the Nazi camp if Joshua Hadn't believed his father or Guido had told him the truth as Joshua is only a 5 year old boy and doesn't have a very good understanding capacity.Eventhough hiding truths and lying to a child is wrong,in this case it is one of the reasons why Joshua survived inspite of all the tortures that the Jews faced in the camp.So it is okay to avoid saying and enlightening all the tragedies and misfortunes at its occurence to the children as it would make them also suffer and would bring no good. But these should be told to them once they get older and wiser enough to understand so that they wouldn't loose confidence in their life and would face anything life throws at them boldly.

1.b.The well being of his wife and his son is important fo Guido. Guido treats his family like a treasured audience for him to entertain, inspire and to celebrate the world around them with. He loves stories, which we learn as he becomes a bookstore owner and through his spontaneously constructed exaggerations that repaint real life in more shiny and happy hues. Guido’s arrival into a new town may seem mundane on the outside looking in, but on the inside looking out — Guido feels like a prince relocating to his palace.
This can be shown by his dialogue,

GUIDO: What kind of place is this? It’s beautiful: Pigeons fly, women fall from the sky! I’m moving here!

With enthusiasm as his paintbrush and unconditional love as his spectacular spectrum of paint, Guido can mutate anti-Semitic slurs used to weaken him into silly, goofy pranks that his young son Joshua doesn’t have to be afraid of. Although his “kill them with kindness” response to pure hatred may seem way too passive for adults who have suffered through such evil aggression, to Guido’s naive son, the sting of this unprovoked ignorance is being diluted and the safety of childhood is being preserved.
Guido continues to shelter Joshua from the evil that men do when he and his son are abducted and sent off to a concentration camp. His vast imagination continues to flourish and be challenged with harsher realities that he must struggle through to keep a level head and an unpolluted spirit about for the sake of his son’s sanity.
This can shown from his wordings,

GUIDO: You can lose all your points for any one of three things. One: If you cry. Two: If you ask to see your mother. Three: If you’re hungry and ask for a snack! Forget it!

What makes Guido such an enduring and beautiful human being is that he refuses to let his inner frustrations and anger bubble up to the surface and sabotage his son’s piece of mind in such a horrid predicament. Never once does he complain or beg for mercy in the presence of Joshua. It is as if he has already accepted his fate, and is now dedicated to maintaining the best possible experience for Joshua, for however much time they may have left, by transforming their dark future into a game of hope.
Inner peace is the priceless gift that Guido gave Joshua by bending the rotten truth until it became its polar opposite. Ignorance definitely becomes bliss.

    His dialogue,
GUIDO: [carrying his son through the camp] You are such a good boy. You sleep now. Dream sweet dreams. Maybe we are both dreaming. Maybe this is all a dream, and in the morning, Mommy will wake us up with milk and cookies. Then, after we eat, I will make love to her two or three times. If I can.
reveals his pain in his heart.

Guido succeeds in two of the unwritten laws of being the ideal parent: give your child opportunities to flourish and keep them safe. Through this imaginary game, Guido is teaching his son to not quit (a fool-proof way to not fail) and to be self-reliant. Sure, he is misleading Joshua, but Guido understands the fragile nature of a child’s limited worldview.

    IBT,

According to me hiding the truth from the boy helped him in this movie. An Oscar-winner for Best Actor and Best Foreign Film, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL is a fable is about a father's love for his wife and son in the midst of the Holocaust. To protect his son's life, he teaches him to hide from the guards during the day. To protect his son's heart, he constructs an elaborate fantasy that they are participating in a very difficult contest to win the ultimate prize, a real tank. And his son finds that this make sense, and he goes along with it. The boy's father keeps on motivating him to win the game. This helped the boy to be enthusiastic and not feeling sick.Guido might have told the real scenario to his son but at that age it would be too much for the boy to understand.Guido was successful in saving the lives of his son and his wife by sacrificing himself.I am sure that Joshau will approach everything in a positive and humorous manner that would make LIFE BEAUTIFUL for him.

To analyze the scenario, we must first understand Joshua and his tender childhood ambience. Joshua is a Kid who has been exposed to nothing, but to the Love and Nourishment of his parents. He has always been under his father's cheerful escort. Consequently, to Joshua, the world is a frolic felicity. What would the innocent child know about Holocaust and concentration camps, in that age? How will the kid be able to perceive the sudden contrast of Life? We have heard of people suffering from trauma of bad childhood scenarios. The book Children of the Holocaust: Conversations with Sons and Daughters of the Survivors written by Helen Epstein would justify why every kid must have a father like Guido. It is natural that not all parent would have the maturity and balance like that of Guido's to display absolute cheerfulness with their beloved despite the pressure and torment of the concentration camps. Guido is one such character that not just Joshua, but everyone must experience. How many ever time people may criticize the stance of Guido, targeting the aspect of missing practicality, Had I been Joshua, I would really wish my father to be like Guido. Innocence of childhood is highly precious and hence any act to protect it, is never a mistake.

  11. (A) Hiding the truth has been a part of relationships since the beginning of time. There are many justifications given to support the reason for doing so. Children , however, have been the biggest victims of this act.
Children have always been shielded from many of the societal “evils” , until they enter the teenager years and discover it by themselves. There is some truth in the fact that kids get permanently damaged if exposed to anything maleficent. Though I empathise with Guido’s intentions , I would personally prefer it if reality is fed to me , regardless of the circumstance. Hard times strengthen any human. So, there is every possibility that even children can become more thick skinned if exposed to the struggles of the world.

  12. Most people think that telling the truth, no matter what the circumstances is , is the ideal way of living. But, I don't think so. Even, Thirukkural, one of the oldest Tamil literature, defines Truth as something that does not do harm to others. It also justifies that a lie is equivalent to truth if it does good to others.

Guido is a humorous man. But he is not just that. He has the ability to alter any situation into a positive one, with his humour and wit. My opinion is that it is good that he does not tell his son about the realities that happens around him. The little boy is too young to understand the situation even if he explains him. Further, he may not be able to prepare himself mentally to face the reality.

Guido played a crucial role in keeping the hopes of the little boy alive. He constantly kept motivating him, telling him that it is all a game and they are about to win that by following some rules that he made up. His would have lived even if he had said the truth. But, I don't think that he would be able to live a normal life after the war, even if he managed to survive. The memories would have haunted him . Guido made sure that he made his son's life happy and beautiful, when he was in the camp and also when he left the camp after the war.

  14. A)I feel hiding the truth from children will normally help, as it is not necessary that children must know the exact situation going on. They themself will realise it once they grow up. "Laughing through the pain" is the best quality that every parent should possess just lik how Guido does. Coming to the film, in the camp, Guido hides their true situation from his son. Guido explains to Giosue that the camp is a complicated game in which he must perform the tasks given to him. Each of the tasks will earn them points and whoever gets to one thousand points first will win a tank. To tackle the situation Guido tells that if he cries, complains that he wants his mother, or says that he is hungry, he will lose points, while quiet boys who hide from the camp guards earn extra points. Guido convinces his son to continue every time he is reluctant to go along with the game. Guido maintains this story right until the end when, in the chaos of shutting down the camp as the Allied forces approach, he tells his son to stay in a box until everybody has left, this being the final task in the competition before the promised tank is his. Guido goes to find Dora, but he is caught by a German soldier. An officer makes the decision to execute Guido, who is led off by the soldier. While he is walking to his death, Guido passes by Giosue one last time, still in character and playing the game. Guido is then shot and left for dead in an alleyway. The next morning, Giosue emerges from the sweat-box, just as a US Army unit led by a tank arrives and the camp is liberated. Giosue is overjoyed about winning the game (unaware that his father is dead), and an American soldier allows Giosue to ride on the tank. While travelling, Giosue spots Dora and reunites with his mother. While the young Giosue excitedly tells his mother about how he had won a tank, just as his father had promised. When the small boy grew up he eventually comes to know about his father's sacrifice and the pain that was hidden from his son just to keep him happy

  15. Ideally, I would always recommend that the truth be uttered. Truth is never meant to be hidden forever. Someday it'll be revealed and it is best not to delay it, for delaying will generally make it worse. It is applicable to anybody, even our own children. However, it also depends largely on the situation we are facing. Sometimes it becomes necessary that the truth be hidden for sometime, such as in this film- 'Life is beautiful'. I believe what Guido did was absolutely justifiable because the circumstance demanded it. He had to save his child and he adopted the easier way because the child was not old enough to understand the situation and revealing the truth to him might have turned out to be catastrophic. By 'easier way', I only mean that the child overcame the situation and survived through it without undergoing much difficulty. However, the risks and pains that Guido suffered is par imagination. Anything could have gone wrong. Guido made a bold move for the sole protection of his child and the child did come to know the truth later.

However, as i mentioned earlier, dishonesty is a formidable quality. Here, would like to quote a beautiful saying from Khaled Hoseini's novel- it says that "there is only one sin in this world, only one, which is theft. All other sins are variations of theft. When you kill a person, you are stealing someones life, when you tell a lie, you steal someone's right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness... there is no act more wretched than stealing.” And I believe, hiding the truth is no better than telling a lie. So unless life puts you in a very tough 'do or die' situation where telling the truth can lead to irrecoverable losses, always be transparent about the reality and facts.

If hiding the truth would save a life then i didn't find any sin in telling lies. In the death camp, Guido constructs an elaborate fiction to comfort and protect his son. Every father spending their whole life to safeguard their children. If Guido had a gun, he would shoot at the Fascists. If he had an army, he would destroy them. But he is a clown and so he took comedy as his weapon to protect his son. The child is not mature enough to know about the death camps and not even the meaning of the word. If he wouldn't have done this, Joshua might be died on the first day of camp itself and no father can bear this. So it is good to lie for a valid reason but the child must come to know what had really happened and sacrifice of his father once he matured so that he can understand what the real life is. More than Guido's fictional story I would say his love, optimistic nature, courage saved Joshua's life.

    A) In a situation that was constantly shifting between life and death, I personally believe that Guido's intentions to hide the truth from his son were correct. Putting ourselves into Guido's shoes for a moment, all we could hope for is to protect our family, when its very well-being is threatened. Young Joshua, at this tender age shouldn't have even been in such a horrendous situation. Such a traumatic experience could have greatly impacted his adult life, albeit in a tragic way. However, Guido's charade, mixed with love and care, managed to shield Joshua from the negativity he was surrounded by. Although one might argue that candor and truthfulness are important traits to be imparted into children when raising them, but doing so shouldn't do 'more harm than good'. In this regard, I would attribute Joshua escape from the Nazi concentration camp, unscathed, is due to the elaborate fictitious game that Guido invented. If not for this, Joshua would have been adamant on leaving the camp and he could have met the same fate as other children in the camp. I could not help but notice that Guido always puts up a happy face near his son. This shows that he is willing to consume the miseries and horrors he is experiencing for his son's safety. "This is my story, this is the sacrifice my father made, this was his gift to me", when adult Joshua recites these lines at the end of the movie, it shows that Guido's sacrifices did not go in vain. It has resulted in exactly what every parent expects from their child- to understand the sacrifices, both implicit and explicit, which parents do for them unconditionally!

  19. 1) (b) What is important to Guido? From the movie identify instances of Guido doing whatever is necessary to protect what is most dear to him.

    Love, Hope, Optimism and Happiness.

In the movie, there were many instances where Guido's rentless efforts both inside and outside the Nazi concentration camp which allayed the delusion in the minds of his family - Dora and Joshua. The way Guido swooned Dora over the course of time, from the accidental run-in at the country side to picking her up after her date with her finacee, with his comical manners was actually a blessing in disguise. Unaware to him, he was actually protecting Dora from societial pressures by making her happy all the time at the cost of his life. Similarly at the Nazi camp, the opera music played by Guido at the control station served as a beacon of hopeto hold on to as she yearns Guido and Joshua.

In case of Joshua, his eyes were all on the big prize - the tank, a game made up by Guido to shield his son from the harsh reality of the concentration camps. This infact protected Joshua being clutched by the Nazi guards. His stubborn nature made him to evade his potential death at the camp (If his father had condemned and forced his son to take a bath, you know what would have happened). The little joys experienced by Joshua from time to time at the camp such as hearing the Guido's comical interpretation of the Nazi guard's order, eating extra piece of bread (which was actually Guido's share which he saved up for Joshua) and the tea party (though Guido was let down by his doctor friend) was mainly due to Guido's optimistic and loving nature for his son. In this manner, Guido tried in every possible way to protect Joshua by misdirection!

There is no absolute right or wrong to this. I would say, it's more of a choice. A 'choice' made on the basis of the situation and the concerned child. Having said that, I also wish to emphasize that unlike an adult, a child is not fully exposed to the world. He/ she doesn't scrutinize and look for bad things and immunize oneself against those. So, the pace with which a child enters this society is important. He/she should not be forcefully and directly pushed to face the full-fledged world. It would be unfair on the child. So, if there is a possibility to make the truth more bearable to the child, like how Guldo does in the movie, I would vote for it.
In the movie, the situation was there right in front of Joshua to witness. Guldo just changed the perspective of the scenario for his child. This, helped the child look and live in that present without fear. That was the father's choice. He wanted to protect the boy's innocence and mental state until a time when he would actually be able to face reality. The fact that the child accepted his father's version of the situation, also, shows that he was not totally ready to see the world at the heights of inhumanness. One may argue saying that had the child come to know about the truth, despite his father's efforts, he would lose trust on his father at least at that point in his life. This almost happens. Joshua says that a grandfather had told him what happens with the kids there but Guldo succeedes in convincing him otherwise.
Who would know better than a father, what's best for his child? It was a very clever idea; manipulating the game to suit the environment and finally adding a reward that Joshua would love!
His 'translation' of the German official's rules was the first biggest factor that convinced Joshua. From there on, repeatedly telling his son how close they were to victory, understanding his child's weakness and using that as a tool to engage his curiosity and interest in the game made Joshua believe his father. The final entry of the battle tank, though it wasn't Guldo's doing, won him his child's trust completely!

I don't think hiding the truth from children is a wrong act in all the circumstances.Whether the parents has to utter the truth to children or not totally depends on the situation. children age has to be considered before revealing a truth to children. It should be considered whether the children are mature enough to understand the real situation or not.
Guido hides the secret from his son only to save his son's life.If Guido has revealed the truth to his son he would have lost his son on the very first day of the camp. When Joshan comes to know the truth he would learn that telling lies just to safe one's life is not incorrect. He will also learn that unconditional love could save their loved one's life.
He will also learn that a man can sacrifice anything to save his family. The director has shown a different side of the camp which we have not seen.

    a) The roads from innocence to maturity are basically more diverse. The path we choose or let our children take creates a heavy impact on their super compromised adult life. Once people outgrow their adolescence, not only their biological growth but also their varience in thought function becomes mundane. Most of the people stop searching for new things and compel themselves to make sense out of what they already know. (Lazy as they may seem). These informations demand the children to know the truth in a pleasing way with less complexity or difficulty (untie one knot at a time). Parents considering their kid to be too young to know the truth are basically demolishing the understanding capacity of them. Later in their life, even if someone really wants to explain them, those kids can never get it right most of the time. Literally, those kids will be paying for their misunderstandings at the cost of blind belief. Putting ourselves into the shoes of Guildo, we can find it right to not let the kid know the truth. But absolutely the kid deserves the truth, not in the same exact way, may a little by little. On the other hand, it appears that Guildo himselves never had his truth in the childhood. He never took things in the exact way it was, and made sense out of what he believed or knew already. His blind belief can be witnessed while he is using the pseudo-magic stuff taught by his friend. Hence Guildo's son is as innocent as Guildo himself. It can also be theorized with traits passed onto family or a butterfly effect that has started a long ago....

Theories apart, i love the continuous ray of hope the father gave for his son and love for his wife. Not to forget the unshakable affection of Principessa towards her family...

  23. a).I see a lot of difference between a lie and hiding a truth. There's a positive connotation attached with the term hiding a truth. People usually hide a truth from their closed ones, in order to save them from the struggles they are facing. When the truth finally surfaces, usually people misunderstood the person for hiding the truth from them, without understanding the struggle encountered by the person in making the world look like a better place to live. In this movie, it's soothes my heart to finally know that the grown-up child respects his father's decision in hiding the truth to him, thus raising him with an optimistic mindset and this is the clarity I wish to have in my life.

    1. (a) I personally feel that the actions of Guido towards his son is not a deciding factor of how the son would grow up in the future. For me, his actions only described his shades and how he remained unpolluted even when the darkness surged without a notification. I posited that the son does not benefit because his optimism and utmost love might result in any of the two ubiquitous natures : good or evil. When the child matures enough to understand what his father sacrificed for retaining the purity of his son's conscience, either he may parallelize with his father's sanguinity; or he may become vindictive and set to avenge his father's death.

But, becoming another Guido is not easy. Guido could do it because he had a core drive. Love. For his wife. For his son. For the life and days he spent with them. I think the love he had on his family, made him to push a little more for them; survive another day in the camp. That's why when he couldn't carry the weights anymore, he didn't succumb as he knew his son cannot survive if he's dead. As a father, he did more than he could, and when the son comes to realise why his father left the 'game' in the middle, Guido's acts can reap good or rot.

If asked for a solution to avoid another vengeful uprising of a son, I'd point out to the mother without a thought. Guido taught his son everything for a lifetime. Now it's his mother's turn to construe to her son what her beloved lover did in order to keep them alive and hopeful. After all, it's exactly what Guido would have wanted his Princepessa to do!

1 . b) Guido is a Jewish waiter at his uncles hotel, he has a good sense of humour and is always turning everything into a joke or a game. He likes to entertain people in all situations, good or bad. He is very good at solving riddles, no matter how hard. Guido is very out spoken about his love for Dora and at the end of the movie he makes the ultimate sacrifice for his family…

Guido’s arrival into a new town may seem mundane on the outside looking in, but on the inside looking out — Guido feels like a prince relocating to his palace.
In the camp, Guido hides their true situation from his son. Guido explains to Giosuè that the camp is a complicated game in which he must perform the tasks Guido gives him. Each of the tasks will earn them points and whoever gets to one thousand points first will win a tank. He tells him that if he cries, complains that he wants his mother, or says that he is hungry, he will lose points, while quiet boys who hide from the camp guards earn extra points.
Giosuè is at times reluctant to go along with the game, but Guido convinces him each time to continue. At one point Guido takes advantage of the appearance of visiting German officers and their families to show Giosuè that other children are hiding as part of the game, and he also takes advantage of a German nanny thinking Giosuè is one of her charges in order to feed him as Guido serves the German officers. Guido and Giosuè are almost found out to be prisoners by another server until Guido is found teaching all of the German children how to say "Thank you" in Italian.so this shows his innocence.

As the film progresses obstacles intensify and put guido's to the test.when josh wants to play with other kids instead of telling him the other children are being killed,it tells them they are hiding to score points.

1.b) Guido is an Italian/Jewish father figure that treats his family like a treasured audience for him to entertain, inspire and to celebrate the world around them with.
Guido doesn’t want his six year old to be scared by the war so he tells him that it is a game. He say’s that when the game is over (the war) who ever gets the most points will win a tank. Giosue goes on believing this. At the end of the war Guido went looking for Dora but was unsucessful, instead he gets caught by a nazi and taken away and is shot. But the game has not ended for Giosue, who came out from hiding when everyone had left the camp. A tank came rolling toward him and he thought that he and his dad had won. The driver of the tank lifted him up and took him for a ride before he saw his mother and was reunited once more.Guido persists with the lie, each time a selfless act.

a)Life is beautiful is a true but if we had became to any problem in my life ,it could have solved that's why life is so beautiful. According to me, from this story we could understand that the father's love along with his family and also he had a great love with his son. So he doesn't want his son to be worried about their situation. In situation the father couldn't say the child about their worries and trouble. He instead told his son that we will get more points in the competition. By such sayings and activities the child would not feel the pain of his father. Any father don't say to his child about their life trouble in this world.

1.b)Guido is defined by his imagination, his irrepressible hope for the future, and his love for his family. He is able to find joy in any situation, no matter how bleak. When he has a goal, he sets about achieving it with single-minded determination, often relying on creative solutions to get the desired results. When he sets about courting his wife, he refuses to let his lowly station get in the way. He charms her with his wit and kindness, winning her heart when it seemed impossible.

When he and his wife are separated, and he is sent to a concentration camp with their young son, he once again refuses to give in, despite overwhelming odds. Deep down, he knows that they will likely both die in the camp, but he does not let the likelihood of failure keep him from trying his utmost to survive. Since he knows firsthand the importance of maintaining a positive outlook, he insulates his son from the reality of their situation. He has a strong enough will to keep from giving in to despair, but he fears that his son will break if he learns the truth about the camp. He protects his son from the worst aspects of the camp by convincing him that it is all a game. This mindset also helps him by distracting him from their predicament.

In the end of the story, he demonstrates his love a final time, risking his life in order to find his wife. He knows that he could easily die in the attempt, and he has no reason to believe she is still alive, but he refuses to give up on her. He hazards his own safety because he is in love with her, and he knows she would do the same for him. Unfortunately, he is unable to find his wife and lead her to safety. Instead, he is caught and killed. He dies without knowing whether his wife and son are safe, but filled with hope that they will find each other.

A Jewish-Italian bookstore owner and the protagonist of the film. After he marries Dora, they have a son, Giosue. He has a way of making seemingly magical things happen by manipulating his surroundings. When he is taken to a concentration camp with Dora and Giosue, he tries to encourage them with his antics and machinations, and he eventually sacrifices his life to save his son.

Notice how he just goes with the flow, makes a joke of the experience, and even takes the opportunity to flirt with Dora a little. (Hey, beautiful women don't literally fall into your arms every day, do they? Seriously, do they?)

Guido's love of people goes hand in hand with his zeal for life. For example, he has very different political views from Oreste, who's a nationalist Nazi sympathizer, but he still manages to get along with him. In fact, the only person Guido doesn't get along with in the first half is Rodolfo.

In Guido's defense, it's real hard to make friends after stealing a man's fiancé and then accidently egging the guy.

He's a weird guy but also kind of an everyman. He works as a waiter but is incredibly intelligent…and a childish clown. He's not a fighter, but he's willing to stand up for those he loves against incredible odds.

He's also super, crazy, incredibly lucky.

Seriously, what are we supposed to do with all this? Well, if we had to focus Guido's hodgepodge of personality into a single phrase, we'd say he's a man who loves life and sees the incredible beauty and value in living it to the fullest.

The first half of the film sets this up. It's a classic rom-com formula: boy meets girl, girl's in love with a different dude, boy goes to extraordinary lengths to prove his love, boy and girl get together. And the rom-com is the perfect story structure to show how beautiful life can be.

After all, is life ever more beautiful than when you're in the throes of new love? Well, maybe when you're absolutely dominating the office March Madness pool. But other than that, definitely new love.

We see Guido's love of life and people all over the film's first half. Exhibit A is the scene where Dora falls out of the barn into his arms

  33. 1 b. In this film, you will find an example of a man who believed in living life, at all costs, and hopefully you will gain an understanding of the moral strength and will required to live this way. The main characters you will meet are Guido, Dora and Giosue (Guido and Dora’s son).  Although this film seems to begin as a comedy and is filled with wonderfully complex fantasies that Guido develops for Giosue's benefit:
Guido plays a game with his son Giosue after they are placed into a Concentration Camp: The object is to get 1000 points; the winner gets a real tank, not one of the toys Giosue is used to playing with. The rules constantly change, but they usually involve a lot of hide-and-seek, plenty of make-believe, and something called "silence." The police aren't really bad guys; they're just acting that way because that's how they win. Anyone complaining about not having enough food is disqualified and has to go home.
Guido is able to make 'light' of a terrible situation, in face of mass fear, for the good of others… be sure not to forget where the characters are and what their fate may be…
Overall, I’d like for you to sit back and ‘take in’ this film.

  34. 1) a. I am a ardent believer of the fact that anything a person does should eternally make him/herself and the people around him/her happy and content. Of-course every person demands to know the truth but I would say that any truth which would worsen the chaotic situation and create a catastrophe may better be revealed at a moment that wouldn't shatter the person knowing the truth or after a the person achieves a emotional and mental maturity to understand and accept the truth.
In the movie "Life is beautiful", Guido does the same thing. In a situation where the family is struggling in a battle between life and death, an optimistic, compassionate father with so much love for his family like Guido, would obviously strive hard to shed a ray of hope and protect his family. The way he puts in efforts to hide the harsh realities of the concentration camp is simply astonishing from my point of view. He manages to change the perspective of the situation and helps Joshua to survive happily thinking the camp as a game for which he would be rewarded, without knowing the fear of death. The translation he gives for the German officer's instructions explicitly convinces the kid and then throughout the movie he beautifully manipulates the scenario and encourages the kid to aim for reward. Only this yearning made the innocent child, who has never faced any problems, remain in the box the whole but the bitter truth and the fear that comes along with it wouldn't have saved the child. Joshua survives and grows up to find out that his dad cooked it all up to see his kid smile and scarified him to protect his family. The film shows how a dad should impart the sense of optimism, love and protection to children as they grow up taking them as their models and the also shows that hidden truths aren't bad always.

    a) According to my point of view, Guido did was exactly true. If he shows his pain and worries to his son, then his son won’t survive and won’t meet his mom at the end of the war. He wants to make his son happy even at tough situation. His character at the beginning was entirely different from the second half. In the first part, he never worried about others surround him but in the second part, his love with his son and wife showed him as a matured man. If he didn’t hide the truth, then his son will be caught by guards and everything will be went in a different way. Joshua innocence made his father to protect his son life and it never been mistake .The thing he did in this movie was exactly correct.

    a)Dear daddy,
It has been more than 5 years since I last saw you, spoke to you, touched your hand, hugged you or just sat on you presence. I miss you and the day which we faced in the war still remains in my heart .Without you, I won’t be here now. The troubles which you faced still pains a lot .You never conveyed those troubles and you hide it from me.I can’t stop thinking about you. You don’t worry about mom; I will take care of her. And I need to meet you when I come there.
    With love,
    Joshua.

  38. 1.(A) I believe that lying and hiding the truth from someone are one and the same and it's wrong. But there is no right or wrong in hiding the truth to protect someone. It depends on the situation and the person. For example take a terminally ill patient who has just learnt that he has only two more months to live and that nothing could be done to save him. He has two options - 1) he could tell his family about his disease and let them be there for him or 2) he could not tell them about it and enjoy the two months without their sorrow. In this the terminally ill person loves his family and his family loves him but which option would he choose? If he chooses the first option his family would be shattered and he would not be able to spend his last days peacefully as the pain of his family would pain him but his death would be something his family would be prepared. If he chooses the second option he could spend his last days with his family without seeing their pain but he would still die, his family would be shattered and they would also not be prepared. There are various factors which affects the decision process such as the person's love for his family, their love for him, if he could go through this without their support, if he could handle their pain, if he could put his family though the shock and so on. We can never confidently say which option is the right one unless we are in that situation. Similarly in the movie 'life is beautiful', Gudio's decision to hide the truth from his son could never be determined if it's right or wrong, it can only be determined as the love a father has for his son and his need to protect him with everything he has. The decision he took is his alone to dissect.

It is okay to lie to children when it comes to issues beyond their limit of comprehension. Guido wants his son to fight for his survival in a sportive yet non-invasive manner. Telling the truth of Nazi terror to his Son will only disappoint him and make him miss his mom more, which will only add more problems for the enslaved father. Guido had terrible successfull coincidences throughout the movie. Tricks have worked out very well for him. The way he translated the camp instructions quoted by the SS officer to 'game rules' made me believe Guido is crazy yet intelligent. He promises his Son that he who is first to score 1000 points will get to ride in the Tank. He even hides the meagerness of Food by encouraging his Son to eat less in order to score more points. Infact, Kids always perform their best when put in the competition. Each time Guido tells Joshua about the tank, he brightens up. There's a point where Joshua as a child loses patience and wants to get back to his mom. Guido convinces him day in and day out. In the final stand, Jews were cut loose, and Guido says his Son that everybody is searching for the boy with the top score in the game, and wants him to hide so they can't find him. He instructs him not to come out until commotion disappears. Poor Guido runs out of tricks and was eventually killed. Joshua comes out and finds out a majestic tank bearing a ' liberation star ' paint-job closing in on him. An American soldier asks the boy if he wants the lift. The boy rejoins his mom. According to me, in a place like a concentration camp, telling the truth to a 8 year old, who can't put up his own fight, is immaterial. Though had a funny perspective, the movie did not fail to show the sufferings faced by Jews in WW2. SS wing of Nazi were cruel animals, they killed women and children recklessly. Many Jewish children were killed in the Holocaust, little knew why they were in the camps and the purpose of the war. They were just advised by their parents to hide from men in uniform. Situations worsened when Allies advanced. Nazi SS were forced to abandon camps. They were not willing to waste fuel just to relocate Jews. They just gased them.

    Dear Father,
This is your Joshua, the boy who survived, the boy who won. I had tough luck figuring out what's going on, why did we leave home, why were Jews not allowed inside stores. One day, you lead me to an adventurous journey, to find an armored Tank. I can't believe I fell for that. It was my birthday when we left home. I was perplexed why we had to stay in the camps, why we had to share our beds, why to wear striped shirts and yellow star everytime. Why were you tired everyday? Why other participants sometimes bleed badly? I happened to meet you in your working place once, I can't still forget the scene where you were struggling to carry an anvil. So much pain you had to endure to earn me my daily bread. I did not know you were building war crafts for those cold-blooded warmongers. You made me believe each day will improve and that we topped the game. We really were. For once, I started asking myself what kind of a game will deprive us from our basic needs. I remember men fighting over food, water and even for rags and pillows to sleep. I always wondered why did some participants never return to the camps. You convinced me they were eliminated and left home. I still remember how we talked to Mom over the speakers which always yells " Achtung.!Achtung.! " The day you left me, I stayed all night in the box, I heard footsteps, gunshots, fire, people screaming, loud thuds that shook the ground. I was scared and missed you. When finally the sounds vanished, I came out to find out the tank you promised appeared. But, you disappeared. Though not comfortable, I stayed happy even in the worsest state a person can be. Thanks father for easing up the truth for me.
    Many love,
    Joshua.

“Life is Beautiful” is one of the movies that I found, had less to do with the Holocaust and more to do with the human feelings. It portrays a beautiful relationship between a father and his son. In my personal opinion, I would suggest Guido’s actions to be worth for the love he had for his family. Guido’s relentless efforts to make Joshua feel safe and happy during the Nazi Concentration camps in the form of a game helped him to successfully hide the horrors of their situation. Indeed, hiding the harsh truth of reality to an 8 year old boy, who is immature to understand what’s going on around him, is the only thing that a father can do to keep up the confidence and the spirits innocent in his son. As a natural tendency of a father to protect his dear son, the only weapons he used were his comedy and wits, the same tools that he used to win Dora’s love for him. Guido uses his weapons rightly as in the translation of the rules in the Nazi camp as the rules of the game which he had described to Joshua, in convincing Joshua to keep his spirits up and hunger down to win a 1000 points, in changing the entire perspective of the situation for his son to love and enjoy every moment of his life. He, in fact, sacrificed his own life in order to save his son’s innocence and of course his precious life, the biggest expression of love one could ever imagine. Thus, it is no harm in hiding the reality to a kid when it comes to a matter of life or death. Revealing the truth, perhaps, might have created more chaos and depression in the young budding mind of Joshua.

    2a)

    Dear Daddy...

This is Joshua, your Joshua writing to you. Daddy, I’m really blessed to get a father like you. Your memories are still fresh in me. It seemed like all happened yesterday but years have passed. My love for you has multiplied through these years. I still remember those happy days of my childhood with you, mum and grandpa; the day when granny came to our library and said that she would come to meet us the following day, as it was my birthday. The day when we left our home, the train travel with people dumped into the coaches as goods, the way you described the place of the camps, the sharing of beds, the blood stains of certain participants, the weary looking eyes of yours, separation from mom…all these had created so many questions in me during those days. Despite the perplexed mind-set, I really wanted to win the tank by scoring a 1000 point. When I look back now, while I laugh at my innocence, I see the magnificent love that you had for me daddy. The pains you had taken to keep me safe make me stand with goose-flesh as your memories linger in my mind. You have never showed me your pain to me daddy. You have always been a great inspiration to me. The night inside the box was the first time when I was away from you and I didn’t know that it would be the last time I would ever be next to you. I am missing you terribly dad. The values that you had taught me have kept my spirits up even today. It has taught me a great lesson – to stay happy and face everything with a positive perspective even when life pushes you to the verge of it. I wish to hold your hand like I’d used to. You have given me the greatest gift in my life - mom - whom I’ll take care of till my last breath.

With loads of love and hugs
    Joshua .

1 b) in this flim Guido aims to protect his son . Telling him that the activities in the death camp are a game enable Joshua , his son to survive and cope with a suituation that he is too young to understand . He also teaches joshua a lesson about finding a way to look at even the worst suituation and make best of them. In camp, Guido constructs an elaborate fiction to comfort and protect his son and explains to him that it is all a game that whoever first gets 1000 points will win a tank not a toy but a real one which keeps the boy motivated and determined to win the game but in real it protects his life from threat. One instances to prove the above point is when Guido acts as translator for a german who was ordering rules to the victim , freely translating them into italian desinged to quit his son's fears and also he lierally hides the child from the camp guards that helps the boy to be in safer place even inside a death trap . The innate innocence of individuals can sustain an optimistic outlook despite the exposre to conflict and corrupt realities . Through the manipulation of truth ones innocence is preserved inorder to protect and provide an escape even in tragedic suituation.a A love of a father go to any extent even it worth his life , Guido's love for his son goes to the extent to even scarifice his life to protect his son who is most dear to him.

  42. 1) According to me Guido's activity can be both helpful as well as hiding the truth can also be dangerous.

The boy is too young to understand the cruelty of Nazis.Guido would be hoping the war would end soon so that he can hide the truth from his son. Because it can cause a lot of psychological problems for a growing child. It would make the child to lose hope and humanity. He can also seek revenge and become a warrior which would make no difference between him and the nazis.

Bt if war had continued for a long time the boy would grow up and he will understand the truth. That would worsen the situation than the first one and it could unleash the beast in him.

Life is Beautiful is a 1997 drama and comedy film, directed by Roberto Benigni. The movie starts Roberto himself as Guido Orefice, Nicoletta Braschi as Dora, and Giorgio Cantarini as Joshua. This movie takes place during World War II. Guido is an Italian-Jewish waiter/bookshop owner who falls in love with Dora, a schoolteacher. He sets up multiple “coincidental” incidents to display his love for her and proves his love for her till the end. When World War II breaks out, all their lives are flipped upside down. Guido and his son are taken to a Nazi concentration camp, while Dora is left behind. She later convinces the soldier to put her on the train, because she refuses to be seperated from her family. When they arrive at the camp, Dora and her family almost never get to see each other but their care and love towards each other stood strong than the power of the concentration camp. Guido would try his hardest to signal Dora to assure her that he and Joshua were okay, but would also try and hide their true situation from their son. He tells Joshua that the camp is a very complicated game in which they need to win 1,000 points in order to escape and win an army tank. He did so, to keep his son fearless, but in real-life, children should know what is going on, as it’s necessary to strengthen themselves. Guido uses his intelligence, his sense of humor, and courage to keep hope, security, and safety to his family. The film portrays the love and sacrifice that a father has for his son during a horrific time in history. He is able to protect his son by making him think that being in a concentration camp is actually a game where the grand prize is a tank. Guido shows his affection to his dear ones, his wife and his son till the end.... He was true to his heart.... If we are true to our heart, it will stand out even after our death..

  47. Magesh Kumar:
It's the situation that matters , telling the truth will hinder or help a child to become a best person in his life. According to me child must be grown by telling the truth , if it is hard and difficult to accept , on a long run the child will accept and grow as a strong man or this truth might affect his whole life. There is another chance that is if a person came to know about the truth hidden during his childhood he might develop hatred towards the person who hid it or there maybe a chance he would understand why the truth was not disclosed and moveon. So it's a 50-50. Everything here depends on the situation , because some situations might or will force people to lie or hide the truth for the betterment of others or for greater good.
In this situation of the world war 2 where the Jews killed in a holocaust , they were mercilessly massacred in the gas chambers as a father what Guido did is right. He didn't want to destroy the innocence of child by saying what exactly happens around and as a father it's his duty to protect his child but I would say that Guido had gone a level up, he was like saviour who never allows evil to touch Joshua. Guido looks like a crazy guy but he is also witty , he had translated the advice by the army general into a tank game for his kid where the person who scores 1000 points would be first . This not only shows his intelligence, braveness but also his immense love for Joshua.
For this entire time in the Nazi camp guido managed Joshua to believe it's a game , I think it is what saved Joshua from being killed by Poisoning in the gas chamber, Joshua is alive because of the fictitious lie told by his father . If a lie or hiding something saves one's life it is better to lie and save them rather than revealing the truth .
Joshua who hid under the cot when every other old man and children were moving towards the gas chamber was the only child survived the camp. When Joshua becomes a matured guy he will be so thankful to his father for the sacrifice he had done to protect his life, then for not ruining his childhood innocence. For Joshua, his father is a hero, god , savior and what are all the good things in the world. Here a lie saved a life so nothing is much greater than saving a life, so here it's the situation which decide whether to reveal the truth or hide it.

Hiding the truth from children has both pros and cons .it depends on the age of children considering whether they are mature enough to understand the situation or not and the piece of matter you are conveying .Not all the things are hidden from the children because parents are the first teachers .parents should teach and let children experience and tackle each and every situation of their life with brave and courage .so it is necessary for a parent to tell things children which they want to know and by this ,children will drive out fear whatever hurdles they face .But in this story , according to me ,father's approach towards his son was correct as his son was too young and delicate to know about the death camp.joshua could not even understand what was happening when his father tell him the truth and would have frightened and panicked as he do not know how to handle the situation…In this movie ,the father’s character was real as every father may do in real basis.Th way he(father) comfort his son by playing games ,being as translator shows his love towards Joshua.

  49. Guido determines to shield his son from the brutal reality governing their lives. This determination becomes a matter of life and death when Guido and his son are sent to a concentration camp three months before the war's end. Of her own accord, and out of her love for them, Dora deports herself on the same train. Now, in this unimaginable world, Guido must use his bold imagination and every ounce of his indefatigable spirit to save those he loves. Telling him that the activities in the concentration camp are a game enables Giosue to survive and cope with a situation that he is too young to understand (one could argue that no one can understand such cruelty). He also teaches Giosue a lesson about finding a way to look at even the worst situations and make the best of them. Throughout the movie, Guido has been able to manipulate his surroundings to create a beautiful world for himself and his loved ones. Now, however, he is in a concentration camp, and, for the first time, a positive outcome seems impossible. When he tells Giosue that they are going on a trip for fun and that everything is a giant game, there is a sense of impending doom. The Fascists are in control now, not Guido, and it seems as if their story can only end badly. The ethics of Guido's strategy suddenly come into question: if they are going to die, is Guido's decision to deceive his son cruel? As the stakes are raised, can his magical charade continue? How can he maintain his son's morale in such a bleak situation? The audience at once fills with dread at Guido's and Giosue's situation and with exhilaration at Guido's determination to find beauty even in the darkest of places.

    1) parents are the real gods present in this world. Mr. Guido, a most loving father didn't want to bring harsh realities to his sons notice who is in his early childhood. I see this as a really positive thing. Mr. Guido potrays the emotions, thinkings and love of a father towards his wards. This is quite natural that parents look to secure us always and make our life pleasant. In this case Mr. Guido inspite of the extremities , he stood up and printed positive footsteps in his young son's mind. This indeed is a very good act, which shows us how humans are bound to love and affection. Mr. Guido thus shines as a successful father.

    2) Dear dad,
Daddy, I’m really blessed to get a father like you. Your are always with me living in my memories. My love for you has multiplied through these years. I still remember those happy days of my childhood with you, mum and grandpa; When I look back now, while I laugh at my innocence, I see the magnificent love that you had for me daddy and the pains you had taken to keep me safe

    1. a. Life is Beautiful is a beautiful movie which depicts a father's struggle to protect his son and his wife. It has a perfect combination of both humour and serious drama. From my point of view, I agree with Guido. At times, hiding the truth from children might help. In case he had told the truth to his son, there might be chances of the little boy being scared and caught in the first. The amount of love and motivation he gives to his son in playing a fake game by masking the real incident is limitless. He protected his son the best and also entertained him even when he was caught. He also made sure that his wife doesn't miss him and communicated with her whenever possible. He made his son happier and his life beautiful!

1.a. I totally agree with Guido in hiding the truth from his son. He made us laugh, mourn and at the end, cry. The serious situation is turned into a game for his son. So, he takes steps inorder to protect his son and wife. I loved the way he never really let his son know what is going on in his surrounding and saves him from the pain, sadness and disappointment about the future. He did whatever he could do to protect them and he took every step daringly without thinking about him. And at the end, he even sacrificed his life for them. I think such films can motivate us very much about the way of living our lives. This movie showed me that life truly is beautiful.

Life is Beautiful is a perfect movie that clearly shows the pure love and struggle of a father to protect his son. First and foremost, Guido aims to protect his son. Telling him that the activities in the concentration camp are a game enables Giosue to survive and cope with a situation that he is too young to understand (one could argue that no one can understand such cruelty). He also teaches Giosue a lesson about finding a way to look at even the worst situations and make the best of them. And from this point of view sometimes hiding the truth from children help them to approach their situation positively and also in some stage we should reveal the truth to the children to make them to realise and understand the real face of the surroundings and society.

Life is beautiful  is a fable is about a father's love for his wife and son in the midst of the Holocaust.Director Roberto Benigni stars as a Chaplinesque character who charms a beautiful teacher by creating a world of gentle magic around them. But then Benigni and his wife and child are sent to a concentration camp. To protect his son's life, he teaches him to hide from the guards during the day. To protect his son's heart, he constructs an elaborate fantasy that they are participating in a very difficult contest to win the ultimate prize, a real tank. And his son finds that this make sense, and he goes along with it.
This magnificent film gives us a glimpse of the Holocaust, but it is really about love, and the indomitability of humanity even in the midst of inhumanity. Life Is Beautiful inspired a lot of controversy from people who said that it was an inaccurate portrayal of the Holocaust, and that it was wrong to set a comedy, even a gentle bittersweet one, in a concentration camp. But the movie is never less than respectful of the suffering during the Holocaust, and of the impossibility of any kind of real portrayal of that experience. Even Schindler's List is not a portrayal of the Holocaust. That experience is fundamentally incomprehensible. The best we can hope for from art is that it gives us glimpses.
We often see in life and in movies that people react to extreme adversity by magnifying whatever sense of control they have left -- think of Mrs. Van Dam's focus on her coat in The Diary of Anne Frank, absurd in light of the fact that they never go outside, so she has no real need for a coat, but important because somehow she has chosen the coat as a place to locate her sense of herself as not having lost everything. In Life is Beautiful, the father focuses on his special talent for creating a feeling of magic to protect his son from the worst reality of the Holocaust, the sense of utter betrayal. Very importantly, he gives his son a sense of control, by letting him think that he has made the choice to participate in the contest. And knowing that he has kept his child's faith intact gives him a sense of control, and purpose, that keeps him going. All the characters in Life is Beautiful demonstrate courage, gratitude, and perseverance that must be learned to live in any situation.
Life is beautiful is worth Watching film.

It can be both the ways Guido is both right and wrong. Once the truth is set out to joshua in the camp the kid would definitely freak out. With chance of survival being nil Guido definitely visualized his son being set free and he wished to make his son free of any post traumatic effects of this holocaust.Trauma is trauma, whether it is besetting children of Holocaust survivors or children of families shattered by atom bombs, civil war, terrorism, domestic violence, sexual abuse, addiction, or even illness and disability.

The child would have been severely affected for the rest of his life if he knows the existing reality hence as a father Guido tried his best to avoid these dire circumstances for his chid to face such. Being a bookstore owner Guido had made an efficient story to convince his kid to make the entire scene look like a reality game where at the end the winner would be gifted with a big tank. Morever the kid could be easily convinced if shown it is a game rather a camp because the child without having any understanding would demand for certain things which Guido is not free to comply. Thus in one way it was easy to convert all the hardships into scores from Joshua's point of view.

On another account it is better to teach the children the reality but in this case the kid is only 5 years old and he cannot understand the situation and so it is good that Guido hid the truth.

  56. Love is the most important thing to Guido. Love for his son can be clearly seen in the film.Guido tries to share joy wherever he is, even in the camps.Guido's relentless efforts to make a lovely exciting experience of the concentration camp to his son. You get exhausted just watching him going through his painful day and yet you smile as he speaks to his son and makes him laugh.. In an attempt to hold his family together and help his son survive the horrors of a Jewish Concentration Camp, Guido imagines that the Holocaust is a game and that the grand prize for winning is a tank. When Roberto is translating the German soldiers insructions to his son so that he isn't scared, it is at that moment that you realize you are under his spell. He's got you and no matter how much sceptisism you may have about the film you know you're witnessing a classic in every sense of the word. Guido eventually sacrifices his life to save his son.

  57. A) In my perspective , hiding the truth from the children doesn't help them to face the problems in their life.Children must know everything and thus helps them to become a strong person. This understanding will help them to come out of certain circumstances in their future with brave and courage. In this short film 'Life Is Beautiful' the father 'Guido ' refused to tell his son about the truth which was not fair.He makes every situation to make his son happy and to hide the truth.Since his son was too young to understand the exact situation, Guido acted in every situation and make his son to believe him.In my point of view, every children should have the rights to know the truth which will make them bold and strong

    1) I would like to support as well as disagree with the argument. Hiding truth from the children when the situation is not well is appreciable. But this doesn't count for all time. some people say that when the children are tend to know which are malice will affect the children's mental health. But it is necessary that economic situation of the family as well as the maturity to the surrounding. In this film, I would say that Guido made a wise choice of hiding the truth from his son as it will affect his future and his psychological character like self-confidence. This portrays the measure of his love towards his son which is a beautiful part of this story.

    2) Dear daddy,

This is JOSHUA, your beloved son. I love u so much, daddy. I would like to thank you for making my life so wonderful with sweet memories. Still, I can remember our days in prison where people used to fight for food but I was actually thinking that they are playing games to score points, which is making me laugh at my own innocence It was my birthday when we left home.

    With Love,
    your Son

The basic idea of whether hiding the exact truth from children about the instances happening around them is good or bad is a very relative argument.Truth in itself is a matter of perspective, what the child believes is his own version of the truth ,it might be in accordance with what the majority of us think is the reality or it might not be so.Children have tender minds and their imaginations have no bounds so it is important for us the adults to be extra careful with what we expose the children to.The movie "LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL" is an excellent tragic-comedy which potrays the lovely relationship between a father and a son,in addition this piece of art is also a social commentary about family life and values simultaneously juxtaposing it with glimpses of the horrors of the Holocaust.Prince Guido the protoganist (played to perfection by Roberto Benigni) is a simple, witty, funny and a light hearted man who's world revolves around his son and his wife whom he calls as "Princess",this being established firmly in the first two acts of the film, the way he handles the dreadful situation of being deported to a concentration camp is justified. His little son Joshua is still unaware of the horrors of the world like racism and genocide. As a father his primary motive would be to save his son,but the method with which he accomplishes this inspiring.A simple imaginary game is framed in which the person reaching 1000 points wins,a real tanker being the ultimate reward. This enables Guido to give instructions and warnings to his son,in a subtle manner without being rude.Joshua obliges to all these instructions , because for him all this is just a game. Some may argue that kids need to be exposed the truth,so that they get moulded into strong and bold men or women when they grow older, but what if the same exposure to these extremely harsh conditions scar them for life, what if this causes a permanent emotional and mental damage which they can never recover from. For instance had Guido told Joshua about the ugly truth of the concentration camps, Joshua would have started to cry and not co-operate out of fear, which would have ultimately lead to his execution.Though he came out of this horrific situation unscathed because of his father's sacrifice and brilliant plan to save him,he would have definitely understood the situation from which he escaped ,in the later part of his life from his mother or from people around him ,so he is not going to be completely ignorant too.I think in places which are filled with despair the only ambition one would possess would be "survival" and Guido ensured that his son survived by hiding the truth,or I would say by twisting the facts to suit his age and mindset. As Nelson Mandela quotes"History will judge us by the difference we make in everyday life's of our children" In this case GUIDO not only made a difference he gave his son the greatest gift one could ever give "The gift of LIFE".

    Dear Papa,
The letter I am writing now has two purposes ,the first one being a token of gratitude and secondly a letter of apology.I am now a fully blown adult wandering the independent streets of Italy and you are the primary reason for my existence.Thank you for shielding me from the horrors of the Holocaust by your self less act of love.Back then I wasn't aware of old people and children getting killed everyday,I was ignorant of the fact that you worked your heart and bones out every single day and yet came back to the dormitory with a smile,I didn't know that we were held hostage by the Nazis and all our lives were in danger. All I knew was the game you framed especially for me,it's funny to realize that I was the only person playing that game ,to win the ultimate prize. As much as I wanted to thank you for all that you have done for us,I also feel terribly sad and guilty, your presence is greatly missed dad .Every single day mom narrates the co-incidental surprise meetings with you,how you made her feel like a princess and how you just took her away with a horse, she always ends the story with tears.I wish I too find my very own "princess" one day.In a way I feel I was responsible for you not being with us today,to make us laugh,to make us smile ,to support and shield us .I wish I had the opportunity to go cycling with you one last time, touch and feel your ever charming face for one more instance to tell you how much I love you.I owe you my entire life dad.I promise that I will follow the values of love and compassion you instilled upon me from my childhood spreading happiness to all the people around. On the flipside things have been looking brighter here. The book store is doing good business for we have expanded it ,mom has taken complete in charge of it though.I have completed my studies and I am planning to join the army.I am finally going to be able to use a real tanker I guess. My life is like a bitter-sweet fable ,it has sorrow and tragedy in it ,but it is also filled with happiness and joyous moments.Afterall we really did score a 1000 points, I really did see the tanker and dad I just wanted to say that "We Won".
    With Love,
    Joshua

  61. 1.a) In general, Hiding the truth from children helps them in some cases and hinders them in some cases. Coming to the movie, it is the case of a gruesome concentration camp, which is unbearable even by adults both physically and mentally. Here, it will help the child only if the truth is hidden. Guido successfully convince his son that they are playing a game for a tank toy. He did so because, Joshua, just 5 years old, if exposed to the truth of actual sufferings in a concentration camp, may even develop PTSD. So, hiding the truth and making him believe that life is beautiful, is vital here. At the same time, revealing the truth is not gonna prepare him for any difficult situations in life. He, not necessarily has to get prepared for difficult situations which life throws, in this way, is my opinion.
    2.a) Dear pappa,
    21 year old Joshua here.
When I close my eyes, memories of you walking funnily at the gun point of a soldier were still vivid. I couldn't open my eyes without shedding a tear or two when I think about that last day of yours. After a tiring day at concentration camp without adequate food, when you even struggled to walk..you happily hugged and lifted me with a smile. It never occurred to me that I am in a sickening camp as a slave, only because of you. It is difficult for me to utter those words "Thank you pappa" swallowing the lump in my throat. I know...just thanking you would look like a pebble in front of Everest but I want you to know that it was from my heart.
Mamma and I are happy now and I am graduating from college this year. You know what pappa...Life is beautiful! It really is.
    Yours lovingly
    Joshua.

    1. a) I don't think hiding the truth from the children is bad. Hiding the truth from children is not fair, unless it doesn't affect the children career and life. When Joshua asks Guido, where they were going on the truck, he didn't tell him the truth that they were headed to the concentration camp. Instead, he told him that they were going for a vacation to celebrate his birthday. And, he also told him that, there we would be engaging in a game and our goal is to win the game by getting 1000 marks. The only idea of saving his sons life, inspired Guido to withhold the hard truth from Joshua. If guido would have told the truth about the concentration camp, his son would have been killed along with others.
He wanted his son to retain his positive, innocent outlook on life. Guido's intention was not to hide the knowledge from his son, his only motive is to save his son's life by sacrificing his own life.

    2. a) Dear paapa,
This is Joshua,ur beloved son. How are you and where are you paapa? I love you paapa. It had been 20 years you left us. Mamma and me are fine here and we hope you are good. Whenever I close my eyes, the last days I spent with you in camp come into my thoughts, and i could not stop myself from shedding tears. During the last day of the camp, When I hide myself in the post box, I never thought, that would be the last meeting of us. I remember each and every moment, where you faced difficulties and sacrificed your life, only to make me happy. If you have told me the real hard conditions of the camp, definitely i would have grown up resentful and would have negative look on my life. Because of you only paapa, I was able to overcome the tragedy through optimism and good humor attitude. Really "Life is beautiful " paapa, when we spend every moment in a happiest way.
    Miss you paapa, come soon......

    Yours lovingly,
    Joshua

  64. Dear Padre,
This is your ever cheerful yet stubborn Joshua writing to you. It has been more than 15 years since I last saw you, but to me, it feels like an eternity. I miss you!. Many things happened in my life, and it is still hard to believe you aren’t here for it. If I could talk to you now, I would go on for hours just catching you up on everything in my life from how I learnt to write a bicycle without training wheels to how I got a job!. Every year on my birthday Madre and I would miss your presence here with us. As I stand here, I would like to first thank you, Padre.

There has not been a day when I don’t imagine what life would be like had you not died. You’ve left us with a lot of good memories of you. Madre always mention how you made her laugh, always listened and treated her like a princess. Whenever I think about you, our days at the concentration camp comes in my mind where you sacrificed your time and energy to satisfy my only need at that time - the big prize - which was the army tank (apart from my craving for bread). I don't know why I need a tank for my diminutive stature at that time which makes me laugh while I think or come across a real tank (1000 points for a tank? I should not have fallen for that trap at that age.) Reminiscing about the days sends chills in my spine and has even given me the panic attacks.

Sometimes, I feel that I have let you down at the camp. You could have told me the reality that why we're all the people and we were isolated to live in such camps. I know that I was naive at that time, but still, I could have managed to understand at least a bit at least on that fateful day. You risked your life at the camp for my happiness. Though I had fun at the tea party, you were on the verge of being caught by the Nazi guards. Similar, we could have been found at the news announcement station (It was fun playing that song which is Madre's favourite). As of now, my eyes well up with tears when I think of the last day. I did not know it would be the last time I would see you.

There are a lot of things that I learned from you how to be always happy and goofy from you. Some days are challenging, and I am overwhelmed with sadness and guilt. Other days are good, and I think about all of our beautiful memories made with you and Madre in and out of the camp. No matter what happens in my life, I will cherish the path you made for me and always keep Madre happy.

Mostly, thank you for being my Padre.

    La Vita è Ancora Bella.

    Amore,
    Joshua

PS: I got to a ride on a real tank!! Also, I own a bookstore just like you Padre!!
